2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz — and WiFi 5 vs. 6 vs. 7 — Explained in Plain English

Open your phone's WiFi settings and you might see two versions of your home network — one ending in "2G", one in "5G". Walk into a store for a new router and the boxes shout WiFi 6, 6E, and 7 at you. None of it is explained anywhere. Here's what all of it actually means, and what's worth paying for.

The short answer

  • 2.4 GHz WiFi reaches farther and gets through walls better; 5 GHz WiFi is much faster at shorter range. Use 5 GHz near the router, 2.4 GHz for far rooms, outdoor cameras, and smart-home devices.
  • WiFi 5, 6, and 7 are generations of router technology. WiFi 6's real-world win is handling many devices at once; WiFi 7's extra speed outruns what most homes can use in 2026.
  • Buying a router today? Get at least WiFi 6. A new router only helps if the router — not your internet plan — is the bottleneck.

Are WiFi bands and WiFi generations the same thing?

No — and they're the two things people mix up most. The band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) is the radio frequency your router talks on. The WiFi generation (WiFi 5, 6, 7) is how modern the router's technology is. They're independent — a brand-new WiFi 7 router still broadcasts on the same 2.4 GHz band your 2010 router used. And neither has anything to do with "5G" cell service, despite the identical name. Confusing? Absolutely. Blame the people who name these things.

What's the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi?

The difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi comes down to range versus speed: 2.4 GHz travels farther and passes through walls and floors better, while 5 GHz is significantly faster but fades quickly with distance and obstacles. Think of the two bands like AM and FM radio — lower frequencies carry farther, higher frequencies carry more.

The practical rule: 5 GHz for the devices doing heavy work near the router, 2.4 GHz for everything far away. This matters extra in East Tennessee homes — log walls, stone fireplaces, and metal roofs eat 5 GHz signal for breakfast. If the bedroom TV two floors up keeps buffering on the "5G" network, switching it to the 2.4 GHz one often fixes it on the spot.

Many newer routers broadcast a single network name and quietly steer each device to the better band. If yours does that, great — one less thing to think about.

What's the difference between WiFi 5, WiFi 6, and WiFi 7?

WiFi 5 (2014), WiFi 6 (2019), and WiFi 7 (2024) are successive generations of WiFi technology, the way phones have generations. Each is faster on paper, but the paper number isn't the interesting part:

Here's the honest read. WiFi 6's device-juggling is the upgrade most families actually feel — the average home now has 20-plus connected things between phones, TVs, watches, cameras, and thermostats, and older routers visibly struggle with that. WiFi 7's speed, meanwhile, mostly outruns both today's devices and today's internet plans. If you're buying a router in 2026, get at least WiFi 6; get WiFi 7 if the price gap is small, not because you expect a miracle.

Will a new router make your internet faster?

Only if the router — not your internet plan — is the bottleneck. Your WiFi and your internet plan are two different speed limits, and you're always governed by the lower one; this is the part nobody selling routers will tell you. A WiFi 7 router on a 50 Mbps plan delivers... 50 Mbps. It cannot manufacture bandwidth. The reverse is also true: a fast plan through a decade-old router in a closet at the far end of the house will feel slow in every room.

The two-minute diagnosis: run a speed test standing next to the router. Quick answers

Should I connect to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi?

Use 5 GHz when the device is in the same room or one room away from the router — it is much faster. Use 2.4 GHz for devices that are far away, behind several walls, or outdoors, and for most smart-home gear. If your router shows one combined network name, it picks for you automatically.

Why does my WiFi show two network names?

Your router is broadcasting its two radios — 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz — as separate networks, often with names ending in -2G and -5G. Both reach the same internet connection. Newer routers merge them into a single name and steer each device to the better band on their own.

Is a WiFi 6 router worth upgrading to?

If your router is WiFi 4 or older, or you have a busy household with lots of phones, TVs, and smart devices, yes — WiFi 6 handles many devices at once far better. If you already own a solid WiFi 5 router and your speeds feel fine, the upgrade can usually wait.

Do I need a WiFi 7 router?

For most homes, not yet. WiFi 7's headline speeds outrun what most devices and most internet plans can use today. Buy WiFi 7 when you are replacing a router anyway and the price difference is small — not as a fix for slow internet.

Will a new router make my internet faster?
